About AstraLab Astralab was started from our interest in reading development in South African schools. The concept of reading development through whole-class teaching was born from our extensive 9-year research. Many schools are either under-resourced in IT or their existing IT facilities are under so much pressure that any IT-enabled literacy / reading programme take a back seat. Most current IT-enabled reading development models in SA require a computer to learner ratio of 1:1. Travelling around SA, we noticed that many computer labs were locked up and non-operational. The cost of owning the right-sized computer lab (many classes in SA / Africa average 50 to 100 learners per class) is just too high for most African schools. (Annual running costs are: ZAR50 k to ZAR100 k per year) Faced with this problem, we developed the Astralab Compujector to enable teachers in SA to deliver reading development classes to unpredictable-sized classes. They would use the AstraLab Compujector, The AstraLab Reading Software and the AstraLab Methodology. We provide all teachers with appropriate operator training on the complete AstraLab Solution. Our Compujector costs +- ZAR 1 k per year to run. That is 1% of the cost of a traditional PC Lab!
